Toronto Draws Tintin

The Beguiling Books & Art and Steamwhistle Brewery are teaming to produce one of the most interesting art shows of the fall, TORONTO DRAWS TINTIN. Featuring the work of dozens of comics artists and illustrators from Toronto, Canada, this event is a celebration of all things Tintin and his creator Hergé, and will feature dozens of pieces of original artwork. There will be a silent auction in support of The Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund.

TORONTO DRAWS TINTIN is a month long art show at Steamwhistle Brewery’s gallery space, with an exciting opening-night party on Wednesday November 2nd. The show will hang for the month of November, and then close out with a a jam-packed celebration of comics, illustration, and art on Sunday November 27th! First, join French creator Stanislas as he travels from Paris to Toronto for the official English-language launch of The Adventures of Herge, the graphic novel biography of the Tintin creator from Drawn & Quarterly. Peter Birkemoe, owner of The Beguiling, will direct an informative Q&A with Stanislas about this exciting work. Space Oddity – Featuring Andrew Kolb Illustrations

Artist Andrew Kolb made a beautiful children’s book based on the song Space Oddity by David Bowie. Unfortunately he got a cease and desist from the record company. He left some pictures from the book up on his site and here is a youtube video of the song with all the illustrations.

Great song, great art. Very nice work Mr. Kolb!

Wacom Inkling

I’m not even going to bother saying much about this product. I have always wanted a Cintiq (still do) but this looks like it would be loads of fun.

For $200, all I am going to say is, sold! I’ll leave the rest to Wacom’s marketing:

The Inkling digital sketch pen captures a digital likeness of your work while you sketch with its ballpoint tip on any sketchbook or standard piece of paper. Designed for rough concepting and creative brainstorming, Inkling is ideal for the front end of the creative process. Later, refine your work on your computer using an Intuos4 tablet or Cintiq interactive pen display.

In addition to capturing your sketch, stroke by stroke, Inkling allows you to create layers in digital files while you sketch on paper. Digital files are transferred to your computer using the Inkling Sketch Manager software, and later, exported to applications such as Adobe® Photoshop® and Illustrator®. Files can also be opened with the included Inkling Sketch Manager software to edit, delete, add layers or change file formats.

Lomography

So, I was walking down Queen St West on Saturday and what store should I discover? Lomography.  What is Lomography? Well, I think it’s best if I just quote what the website says:

“Lomography is a Magazine, a Shop, and a Community dedicated to analogue photography. It began with a fateful encounter in the early 1990s, when two students in Vienna, Austria, stumbled upon the Lomo Kompakt Automat – a small, enigmatic Russian camera. Mindlessly taking shots from the hip, and sometimes looking through the viewfinder, they were astounded with the mindblowing photos that it produced – the colours were vibrant, with deep saturation and vignettes that framed the shot – it was nothing like they had seen before! Upon returning home, friends wanted their own Lomo LC-A, igniting a new style of artistic experimental photography that we now know as Lomography!”

So, that’s that! I bought a Diana Mini with flash and gels and also grabbed two Fuji Superia 400 35mm expired film! Sometimes, analogue is more fun!
