Prisoners Of Gravity Now Available Online

TVO, I love you! I remember this show from when I was a youngster. I used to watch it all the time and now it’s online for free. The other cool thing about the show is that the montage at the beginning is drawn by none other than Canada’s own Ty Templeton.

I took Ty’s class at the Toronto Cartoonists Workshop and I would highly recommend anyone that has an interest in story telling, drawing and sequential art to check it out. He is an encyclopaedia of knowledge and has a great sense of humour as well.

Prisoners of Gravity, the acclaimed comic book and science fiction news magazine series, is not television. It’s the world’s orbital oracle. It’s the future now. Trapped in geosynchronous orbit, unable to escape the planet he’s convinced is hurtling toward self-destuction, Commander Rick (Rick Green) commandeers the airwaves to transmit his weekly pirate broadcasts. Assisted by his on-board computer assistant Nan-Cy (his trusty NANo-CYbernetic 3000 computer) aboard the Reality-1 Communications Satellite, Commander Rick explores crucial issues of the late twentieth century in the language of the faithful: science fiction, comics, computers, fantasy, and horror, all respectfully recognized in the series as adult art forms. He interviews these genres’ writers, artists, and filmmakers, focusing on a different theme in each program: politics, war, fears, dreams, addictions, children, new worlds, and even the current popularity of dinosaurs.

Guest included Ray Bradbury, William Gibson, Harlan Ellison, Anne Rice, Frederik Pohl, Clive Barker, David Brin, Charles de Lint, Robert J. Sawyer, Spider Robinson and Terry Pratchett, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, Bob Kane, Frank Miller, Chris Claremont, Scott McCloud, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Gene Roddenberry, Michael Dorn, James Cameron and David Cronenberg.

Thought of You Animation

Ryan Woodward has really impressed me, and a lot of other people based on the feedback from this amazing and emotionally charged animation. My hat is off to you Mr. Woodward! There is also a nice making-of piece here and there will be a DVD release of the animation with a full length making-of in the near future. And to think, this was done in his spare time… people need to stop complaining that they have no spare time!

The drawing style and organic feel of this piece is what does it for me. The choice of music is just the icing on the cake. See for yourselves!

Cthulhu Mythos, As Imagined By Kids

What do you get when you mix H.P. Lovecraft‘s Cthulhu Mythos and about 16 kids ranging from 8-18 years of age? Pure awesomeness of the artistic kind… and potential nightmares for the next few weeks.

David Milano “…put on some creepy Lovecraft inspired music and over the course of about and hour I told them synopsis versions of three of Lovecraft’s tales (The Shadow Out of Time, At the Mountains of Madness, The Call of Cthulhu) getting quickly through the set up and on to the descriptions of the monsters.”

Check out the galleries of the drawings below and David’s blog for more information.

Odosketch, The Digital Canvas

Odopod, a digital agency, came up with a great “digital canvas”  using flash called Odosketch. I know this app has been around for a while (2005 I believe) but it’s definitely worth reminding people it’s outo there. Not only can you sketch and save your drawings but it also plays them back like an animation. Since Odopod launched the site, they have had over 100,000 sketches saved.

“Odosketch seeks to recreate the decidedly non-digital experience of working with a sketchbook. Its papery textures, variety of brushes and intentional imperfections make you forget you’re working on a screen.

We also added a playback feature that recreates a drawing from empty canvas to the completed piece animating the drawer’s brush strokes (complete with erasures, cross-outs and do overs) and revealing the creative process at work.”

Check out the application and have hours of fun (but don’t try it at work, it could be dangerously addictive).

The Joker and Lex Luthor as Calvin and Hobbes

If you are a fan of either Batman, Azzarello, Bermejo, Calvin and Hobbes or all of them, then you will absolutely love this tribute to Calvin and Hobbes starring Lex Luthor and the Joker. Azzarello and Bermejo have made a great tribute to Bill Watterson.
